The Districts suffered oppression and injustice from the ruling state, ‘The Capitol’, and the only way to earn freedom was to fight. In both these situations, violence was the only answer to end injustice and attempt to bring back equality for everyone. A situation occurring right now involving injustice and violence is the crisis in Syria. Syria is in the middle of an extremely violent civil war, with the latest attack using poisonous gas that killed over 1000 people. The United States of America speculates that president Bashar al-Assad is behind the attack and is using chemical weapons against civilians. Fighting between the Government military and rebels has killed more than 100,000 people and created 2 million refugees, half of whom are children. For this, The US and allies are preparing for a possible imminent series of limited military strikes against Syria but is violence the answer in this situation? I believe it is, for if the world turns a blind eye on the Syrian Government’s continuous attacks on civilians, people who cannot stand against them, thousands of innocent people could be killed. The only way to stop this injustice is for more developed and affluent countries to step in using military force. Others argue that because of suffering and loss, violence in war should never be the answer, but because of past historical evidence involving injustice and violence in our world, sometimes the only way to make peace and equality, is through violence and military force. In World War One, violence was not the answer in the end and resulted in the loss many lives but if we had said no to violence in World War Two, how many Jewish people would be left in the world and would Germany be controlling most of Europe? Tora! Tora! Tora! | Historical Errors The movie Tora! Tora! Tora! Was meant to be a historically accurate movie but the movie had mistakes in it. Several factor mainly this movie being about the Japanese made me choose it. The Director Richard Fleischer came to making this film in kind of a weird way. Tora! Tora! Tora! Doesnt show any real bias toward the Japanese or the American sides. The film did a great job in the way reflect the time period in which it was made. This movie had a bunch of factual errors in it for being a historical movie. I think the thing that the Author Richard Fleischer was trying to prove was that the director was trying to show a real actuate idea of what happened in Pearl harbor without any Opinion getting in the way. The film starts with Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto being appointed to command the Japanese First Fleet and Admiral Husband E. Kimmel to be in command the United States Pacific Fleet located in Pearl Harbor. There are alternating scenes between events in Japan, Hawaii and Washington D.C. The scenes with the Japanese are spoken in Japanese and have English sub-titles. In the begging there are scenes that show a lot of Tension between the US and Japanese Military. While W Tensions rise between the two countries and the two sides are finding no diplomatic solution war with the U.S. becomes inevitable Admiral Yamamoto makes attack plans in an event that the Japanese Armys leaders prevail. At the same time U.S. military strategists and intelligence monitor Japanese military activity and communications, trying to predict Japans future plans. Later in the film, the Japanese Navys strategy and plans of the are being intercepted by a large number of officers the American military in Hawaii and the politicians and the secret service men in Washington D.C. When the Japanese fleet sails towards Hawaii, they receive a message called Climb Mt. Niitaka, which authorizes the attack to proceed. In Hawaii Kimmel gives orders to his aircraft carriers to go out to sea in order to prepare for Japanese fleet movements in the Pacific. Kimmel decides to leave all of the slower battleships in Pearl Harbor. On December 7, 1941 before dawn the Japanese launch their attack from six carriers northwest of Oahu. When the sun rises over the Hawaiian Islands the Japanese air commander gives the felt a message Tora, Tora, Tora which meant that no U.S. air support has noticed and that the American fleet knows nothing of the upcoming ambush. There were several reasons why I chose this movie. One of them was that it had to do With Japanese things and I like Japanese things. The fact that this film is made by an American person and a Japanese person made it interesting to me. Also the fact that I wanted to get an idea of what happened in Pearl Harbor. And then he took at Japan but he knew very little about Japan and how it worked. So he started researching about Japan and became fascinated by their culture. After that He made another Film on Japan with Elmo Williams that he was proud of. So after that he worked with some Japanese film director to make Tora! Tora! Tora! This film was made in a weird way by Richard Fleischer.( Fleshicer, Richard) This Movie really doesnt show any bias to the Japanese or the Americans. The main reason for this is that the Japanese part where made by a Japanese film director and the American parts were made by Richard Fleisher, so there was no bias of either side. Also bloth directors where only showing their own country so there wouldnt be one directors opinion getting in the part of the other county. Also both film directors tried to make the film as historically accurate as possible so there wasnt any option in the movie. Tora! Tora! Tora! Most of the things such as the type writer room, the way the people dressed, and the war things like plans and battle ships where all correct. They were off on a couple things like the angled run ways ever were there they only had the straight ones back then. So for the most part they got the things that happen back then right with a few mistakes. This movie had a ton of factual errors in it. In one of the scenes there was a damaged B-17 bomber that had a zero on its tail and the tower told it to go around. This would happen because a B-17 cant out run a zero, he would have just landed and get the hell out there as fast as possible. Another Mistake was that the first time you see Washington DC one of the building is the Museum of American history, this wasnt built until 1959. Another one like I said before was that the since with the Japanese fighter taking off on the angled deck. During the war they only had straight decks the angled one didnt come until after the war. Then there was the time where the when the Japanese planes arrived at Hawaii. They flew into the mountainous area near Schofield Barracks. Problem was that there was a white cross memorial that identifies the location of first appearance of the Japanese planes on Oahu. (Snadys, Jon) Obviously it couldnt have been there during the attack. Also with the since with the Japanese sub and the American destroyer the destroyer show was a much newer one the real one was one back from World War One. One other mistake is that the radar show in movie at Ahou point was not the right one. The real was a newly devolved scr-270. When the Japanese planes where taking off there were a bunch of different planes such as the Zero, Kate, and Val but the only planes deployed at first where the Zeros and then the other planes took off.( Westerman , Olav). Another Mistake is when Yamamoto is Another error is that some of the Japanese bombers are seen with only a pilot when they would also have a gunner and a radio operator. he is wearing bars like American officers when Japanese officers wear medals. Before the attack the bugler blows a correct call but in the real life the flag must be raised before the bugler blows. Also during the attack Doris Miller was on the USS West Virginia during the attack but in the movie he was on the USS Arizona. (Myserty Of Pearl Harbor) Another error is that some of the Japanese bombers are seen with only a pilot when they would also have a gunner and a radio operator. In the movie there was very little some compared to the real attack. Also the since where the b-17 bomber had trouble landing was wrong during the real attack none of the planes had trouble with their landing gear. During the attack on Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attack a band on the deck that is playing the Star Spangled Banner just plays the song faster, obviously in real life any sane person would stop and man their battle stations. The movie misquoted admiral Yamamoto famous speech about the chances of success with the war with America the movie said If we must, we can raise havoc with them for a year after that, I can guarantee nothing. While in real life he said I can run wild for six months after that, I have no expectation of success. ( iMDb) A movie about Pearl Harbor without opinion or bias was Richard Fleischers goal. The feasibility and profitability of a wind farm, proposed to supply the island town of Lowton with electricity

The following report investigates the feasibility and profitability of a wind farm, proposed to supply the island town of Lowton with electricity. Using cost-benefit analysis techniques including spreadsheets formulated using Microsoft Excel the validity of the potential construction (15 turbines) was established. The Results (including equations formulated) are available in table format in the ‘Presentation Of Results' section (p 7). Other factors, including the difficulties involved in the environmental decision-making process are discussed, for example the difficulties surrounding applying a monetary value to natural resources, pollution levels and visual intrusion. The strengths and weaknesses of the decision making process are highlighted. Environmental concerns and the importance of developing alternative energy sources are discussed. The report concludes that the construction of the proposed wind farm should go ahead, and that it could be a profitable enterprise. Introduction This report is to investigate and appraise the environmental impact of a potential wind farm for the small island town of Lowton, while assessing the profitability and feasibility of this. The island is inhabited by 1000 residents and currently has power supplied by a conventional power plant on the mainland, which owns a 650 watt electrical power station. The wind farm in question would be small (about 15 turbines) which would be expected to service the town for 20 years each. The immediate cost of constructing and installing the turbines would be à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½1 million per mega watt (MW) and the potential output should be reached by the end of the second year. The cost of the fuel replaced by the wind power creates a saving of à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½25 per MW hour. Due to the fact wind is an uncontrollable phenomenon it is not available 100% of the time. The potential availability is estimated at 50% A spreadsheet shall be devised using Microsoft excel in order to determine the financial benefits/losses. The possible environmental impacts shall also be discussed and weighed up, using moral and financial arguments. Aims & Objectives The aims and objectives of this report are to assess the profitability and feasibility of the construction of the proposed wind farm. Economic modelling skills shall be used to create and explain a discounted cash flow model. A brief environmental impact assessment shall be created along with a discussion of environmental valuation techniques. Background To Study The town of Lowton lies on a small island in two miles into the English Channel. It is not densely populated; having only 1000 residents- therefore does not have a high demand for power. The current situation sees the electricity being supplied by a local power company on the mainland via undersea cables. The company in question have a 650 MW conventional power station. The cost of constructing and implementing the 5MW wind farm would be à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½1 million per MW at the start (year 1) and would be subject to later discounts due to the low maintenance costs of the turbines. The cost of the wind power would save à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½25 on coal per hour. Methodology The primary supplied data was entered into a Microsoft excel spreadsheet (capital cost, capacity in MW, wind efficiency levels, capital repayments, discount rate, MW per hour of turbines, compared with the cost per MW hour of turbines and conventional generators. The NPV function, found in ‘f'- financial section- was used and the appropriate formulas were input. (Supplied on spreadsheets) In addition to the above information sheets issued by the Department of Trade & Industry were studies for further information. The spreadsheet was then altered to demonstrate the way in which a variation in wind efficiency may affect the NPV, should the turbines be less effective than anticipated. Presentation Of Results Discussion & Analysis Of Results The results show the potential wind farm to be a profitable project. The discount rate is used in long term projects to reflect the fact things are worth more in the present than in the future so it is the opposite of compounding. 30% was decided to be the efficiency rate in the sensitivity analysis, as it is possible that a wind farm that operates on full speed 50% of the time to have an annual output of 30% efficiency. People are impatient and would rather be instantly rewarded for something than wait to be rewarded in the future, even when this means sacrificing potentially larger gains for smaller immediate ones. This is basically human nature as the future is uncertain. A person may die for example, or shares/projects may collapse before the maximum potential is obtained. The cost of long-term investment also means a persons financial resources are tied up so unavailable for other purposes. Discounting can also be accused of belittling future benefits and the way it asks people to make personal decisions based on their own values about public goods closes off public debate. Cost benefit analysis (CBA) should also be used for determining the worth of a project. It should not merely be a financial decision when hard to value resources/phenomenon's (e.g. habitat) are involved. This raises moral and ethical questions. It is incredibly hard to attempt to put a value on human life. One way in which economists do this is by paying wages at levels which reflect the risk of the job involved e.g. soldiers earn more than teachers due to the extremely high risks associated with being sent into battle. Rather than place a value on the individual it is considered more sensitive to see it in terms of altering the morbidity rate e.g. discovering how much a household will pay to cut pollution levels, which would save lives each year. Studies have shown that by cutting pollution levels by 26.570 GWH may reduce deaths by as many as 80. Many other factors are almost impossible to put a price on, e.g. visual intrusion, noise levels. CBA does offer the opportunity to bring the costs and benefits of potential developments into the decision-making framework (as the name would suggest) and provide a ‘precident'- a way to approach environmental problems from a solid standpoint. It also allows sensitivity analysis to be conducted to establish variations in assumptions. It is a transparent process that allows outsiders the chance to see how a decision has been made. The downsides of CBA, however, include the fact that it has to assign a cash value to a natural/environmental phenomenon. There is a possibility the process may be miss-used to promote a political decision as opposed to promoting a neutral investigative /objective standpoint, as the results of the ‘Pevensey Levels' exercise in Sussex illustrated. Cost & Value Of Wind Energy The cost of wind energy is dependant on the initial cost and productivity of the turbines. In this case it is à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½25 per MW hour. Installation costs may be covered relatively quickly in a successful case due to the low maintenance costs and 20-year lifespan of each turbine. The annual output of the turbines, however, is dependant on the position and mean wind speed of their erection site, which directly affects the cost of electricity per unit. Despite the fact the proposed site is expected to reach its full potential 50% of the time (meaning the annual output may be the equivalent of working on full power 25-30% of the time) the supply tends to peak with demand, e.g. in the dark windy winter months when there is more demand for heating and lighting. Although typical wind farms produce 2-3 times less power than conventional plants they are environmentally friendly, sustainable and low maintenance in comparison. The government is currently trying to encourage the switch from conventional power plants to alternatives. It established the NFFO (Non-Fossil Fuel Order) in 1991-1998 that is now being succeeded by NFFO2- the aim of which is to subsidise and popularise the use of sustainable resources until they are in a position to compete with conventional and more traditional ones. The success of this scheme depends largely on the ever-volatile energy market. THE PRICE OF PROGRESSION? Due to the fact many benefits of sustainable power sources are long term it can be hard to interest investors. It is also hard to put a monetary value on factors such as pollution reduction, human life or the loss of wilderness land/habitat. PUBLIC SAFETY: Any man made product has a risk of malfunction but the risk from a wind turbine is considerably less than that of a plane or car engine etc. Coupled with the fact they are usually situated far from housing/roads the chance of receiving physical injury from a turbine is minimal. Despite the fact it is possible for a rotary blade to become detached in high winds nobody has ever been injured by one, and it is unlikely a person would be nearby in such bad weather conditions. Environmental Impacts RISK TO WILDLIFE: There is little risk to wildlife posed by wind farms. They produce little noise, and studies do not show them to disturb wild animals. Local wildlife is indeed likely to benefit from the construction of a wind farm, through the cuts in pollution levels and subsequent rise in air quality. LOSS OF WILDERNESS LAND: A method known as the ‘Clawson Method' is used to assess the monetary value of a wilderness area. It is also called the ‘Travel-Cost Analysis'. Visitors to a site in question will be interviewed to establish how far they have travelled to reach the area, from five graded zones surrounding the site. Figures are then derived from each 1000 visitors and the travel cost is considered to be the cost of their visit. Conclusion: The spreadsheet analysis of the potential wind farm indicates it would be a profitable enterprise, due to the high Net Present Value produced. This is however only deducted from a model that is only as good as the person who designed it and the assumptions it is based on. It is therefore subject to any number of unforeseen crises, and should merely be viewed as a hypothesis. The Cost-Benefit Analysis also indicates that switching to environmentally friendly sources of power would be advantageous to both present and future generations. Discounting affects future generations as the higher the discount rate, the quicker the non-sustainable resources are likely to be exhausted. The approach may backfire if the benefits are not obtainable for a prolonged period as investment will be virtually impossible to find. It is therefore hard to protect slow-replenishing resources like tropical hardwoods. Discounting can even help to accrue worse future damage-however devastating the effects-if the future damage will not be felt for several generations. There is no real alternative to CBA despite of its faults, so it should be refined rather than disregarded as a source of decision-making. Environmental decision-making is a sensitive issue. The only possible other way is to use a citizens jury. Where this has been tried however the members failed to fully understand what was expected of them , or how to place prices on abstract phenomenon. Most educated individuals recognise the benefits to society gained from switching to ‘green' (sustainable) energy sources. The development of these sources are still in the early stages and are not going to affect the conventional production of power in the short term, it is still important to develop and popularise such alternatives today. This is the only way in which they will win social and scientific approval and eventually overcome fossil fuel consuming plants as a source of power.

How the Gershwin's create mood in their songs essays The four Gershwin songs I have studied are Someone to Watch Over Me, Lets Call the Whole Thing Off, Fascinating Rhythm and Foggy Day. In each song the Gershwins have managed to create mood easily through various compositional Techniques. Fascinating Rhythm was written in 1924 for Fred and Adele Astaire. The mood of the song is upbeat, but frustrated. The melody is highly syncopated which along with breathless lyrics makes the song sound agitated and it adds to the effect that this rhythm is causing them disturbance. In the verse of the song it is explaining the situation which is the first thing that sets the mood. The use of a three note droning motif in the main melody creates a rather lost feel to the song, the rhythm is taking over them and they are becoming powerless towards it. The blues notes creates a major/minor ambivalence which adds to the confusion of the singers about the rhythm. The blues notes also emphasises the word rhythm, which emphasises its importance and annoyance in the song. The use of a hard p in pit-a-pats reinforces the constant beat, which in turn reinforces the rhythm and how it is constant and wont let leave them alone. The refrain in FR has 4 sections to it, which are all 8 bars long. The consistency of the bars links to the consistency of the rhythm. The lyrics in the refrain describing the rhythm, are quite different to those in the verse, which are little rhythm whereas in the refrain it is seen as a fascinating rhythm. This changes the mood of the song, it isnt so much of a nuisance anymore, it is actually quite intriguing. Major tonality is established in the refrain for the first time which makes the song sound more together, it no longer is confused. Even if you’re still at college, you’ll need to email your lecturers once in a while (maybe to plead for an essay extension, or to ask for help) – and many employers now expect resumes and cover letters to be sent by email. So, being able to write a professional, business-like email is a crucial skill. Daily Writing Tips has already covered the email subject line, but the body of your message also matters. 1. Start with a salutation Your email should open by addressing the person you’re writing to. Sure, you can get away with leaving out the salutation when you’re dashing off an email to your friend, but business-like messages should begin with: Dear Mr Jones, or Dear Professor Smith, (for someone you don’t know well, especially if they’re a superior) Dear Joe, or Dear Mandy, (if you have a working relationship with the person) It’s fine to use â€Å"Hi Joe†, â€Å"Hello Joe† or just the name followed by a comma (â€Å"Joe,†) if you know the person well – writing â€Å"Dear Joe† to one of your team-mates will look odd! 2. Write in short paragraphs Get straight to the point – don’t waste time waffling. Split your email into two to four short paragraphs, each one dealing with a single idea. Consider using bullet-points for extra clarity, perhaps if you are: Listing several questions for the recipient to answer Suggesting a number of alternative options Explaining the steps that you’ll be carrying out Put a double line break, rather than an indent (tab), between paragraphs. 3. Stick to one topic If you need to write to someone about several different issues (for example, if you’re giving your boss an update on Project X, asking him for a review meeting to discuss a payrise, and telling him that you’ve got a doctor’s appointment on Friday), then don’t put them all in the same email. It’s hard for people to keep track of different email threads and conversations if topics are jumbled up. 4. Use capitals appropriately Emails should follow the same rules of punctuation as other writing. Capitals are often misused. In particular, you should: Never write a whole sentence (or worse, a whole email) in capitals Always capitalise â€Å"I† and the first letter of proper nouns (names) Capitalise acronymns (USA, BBC, RSPCA) Always start sentences with a capital letter. This makes your email easier to read: try retyping one of the emails you’ve received in ALL CAPS or all lower case, and see how much harder it is to follow! 5. Sign off the email For short internal company emails, you can get away with just putting a double space after your last paragraph then typing your name. If you’re writing a more formal email, though, it’s essential to close it appropriately. Use Yours sincerely, (when you know the name of your addressee) and Yours faithfully, (when you’ve addressed it to â€Å"Dear Sir/Madam†) for very formal emails such as job applications. Use Best regards, or Kind regards, in most other situations. Even when writing to people you know well, it’s polite to sign off with something such as â€Å"All the best,† â€Å"Take care,† or â€Å"Have a nice day,† before typing your name. 6. Use a sensible email signature Hopefully this is common sense – but don’t cram your email signature with quotes from your favourite TV show, motivational speaker or witty friend. Do include your name, email address, telephone number and postal address (where appropriate) – obviously, your company may have some guidelines on these. It makes it easy for your correspondents to find your contact details: they don’t need to root through for the first message you sent them, but can just look in the footer of any of your emails. Putting it all together Compare the following two job applications. At times when soaking in the tub or jogging in the park are not just practicable, I find that creating a mental picture or remembering an inspirational line helps put things in perspective and prepares me for heightened concentration. My favourite mental picture is that of gently rolling waves lapping the shore of a beach deserted but for a few people: white sand, blue sea, reclining chair, tall glass of iced tea in hand.
